5 myths about SEO

Law firms are taken to the cleaners by SEO hucksters every day. Must be rule #1 for ex-yellow page sales people in SEO sales training class to hit up lawyers - they have money, they're desperate, they don't know what's going on and they won't hold you accountable as they don't know what SEO consultants do.

My latest SEO tips come from Lee Odden, CEO of TopRank Online Marketing, and publisher of Top Ranking Blog, one of the blogs you ought to add to your feeds. And these tips apply equally to blogs as well as websites. If you haven't learned from me by now, blogs are just websites, except a heck of a lot more effective when marketing.

Lee posts 5 Myths about SEO. I'm giving you only the highlights and a few personal comments so read the whole post.

  1. Search Engine Optimization is a collection of tricks to fool search engines. If you’re ‘fooling’ the search engines, then you’re probably fooling users too.
  2. People in our market don’t use search engines. Right, when in fact nearly 70% of execs and in-house counsel turn to the net, during the law firm selection process. And they are not just searching firm/lawyer names or going to Martindale.com
  3. SEO is a single event. Fact is creative link building, creation and promotion of new content, integration with other online/offline marketing, and social media are key.
  4. SEO is a function of IT. In fact, SEO initiatives should be managed strategically by the business like any other major marketing initiative.
  5. Our site doesn’t get a lot of visitors, so SEO wouldn’t work for us. Like Lee, I do hear that from what appear to be educated people. Comments like this are just insecurity about SEO as a discipline and its effectiveness for a particular business. ]

Read the whole post. Lee even gives you 6 bonus myths, one better than another.

Improve your Search Engine Ranking by Jim Pretin

If you are an internet marketing novice, you are probably facing the seemingly impossible and somewhat daunting task of trying to get your site listed on the first page of the search engines. You probably have no idea how to improve your ranking. For the purposes of this discussion, we will outline the procedures you should follow to climb steadily to the top of the search engines, while still making sure that you attract qualified traffic that will actually be receptive to the products or services that your website offers.

The first thing you need to understand is that your search engine ranking will not improve overnight. There are quite a few charlatans in cyberspace who work as Search Engine Optimization (SEO) consultants. They will charge you an arm and a leg for their services, sometimes as much as $2,000 per month or more. They often make dubious claims that they can get you ranked on the first page of the search engines within a few months, and if not, they will kindly refund your money.

However, there is a catch. Once you pay the initial deposit and the SEO company begins working on your website, they will often optimize your website in such a manner so that you will be able to quickly rise to the top of the rankings for a keyword that is either not significant or will not attract any real traffic to your website.

For example, if your website provides auto insurance quotes, any SEO consultant knows that it will be impossible to expediently get your website ranked on the first page of Google for a highly competitive phrase such as AUTO INSURANCE QUOTES. So, instead, they will pick a variation of that phrase, such as AUTO INSURANCE QUOTES FAST, for which there is no competition, and you will quickly rise to the top. The only problem is no one will ever actually use that precise phrase when searching for auto insurance quotes, so even though the SEO company delivered on its promise to improve your ranking, you will still not get any visitors to your website because you will be ranked high for a keyword that no one will ever use when searching for auto insurance quotes.

So, you need to use a different approach if you want to not only improve your ranking, but also attract qualified traffic to your website. The first thing you need to do is optimize your website for the keywords or phrases that people actually use when searching for products or services related to what you offer. For example, if you sell vitamins, you would want to improve your ranking for the phrases BUY VITAMINS or BUY VITAMINS ONLINE. To optimize your website for your chosen keywords, you should either hire a web designer that has experience optimizing websites, or you should purchase search engine optimization software that will show you how to tweak your website and how to change your HTML code so that your site is properly optimized. You should also try to have a decent amount of free content on your website that relates to the keywords or phrases for which you want to be ranked higher.

The next step is to submit your site to the search engines, if you have not already done so. It seems silly to mention this considering that we are talking about search engines anyway, but some people actually forget to submit their website to the engines, or only submit their site to a couple of search engines and then quit. There are hundreds of legitimate search engines and directories in cyberspace, and you should submit to all them. I recommend that you look for search engine submission companies on Google and pick one that charges a small monthly fee to submit your site to the search engines once per month.

The last step, and probably the most important component of getting ranked higher on the search engines, is increasing your link popularity. The more websites that are linking to your site, the higher your ranking will be. To increase your link popularity, you will need to submit your website to link exchange directories so that you can swap links with other websites (they will link to you if you agree to link to them). Also, you can write articles and submit them to article submission directories. At the bottom of each article you write, you are allowed to include a link to your website. As the articles you write are put into circulation and are published on other websites, your link popularity will increase.

If you employ each of the strategies outlined in this article, you should be able to improve your search engine ranking while at the same time garnering the kind of traffic that you want. No website can improve its ranking overnight, but if you are persistent, your efforts will be rewarded in the long run.

Whitepapers : Search Engine Optimization Tips

Genuine and fresh content, Target on keywords and key phrases, Use of descriptive page titles and real page headings, User Friendly Url's, Link Building ,Sitemaps/ Google Sitemaps/ ROR Sitemaps ,Translating Your Website Into Other Languages.

Mumbai, India - Genuine and fresh content is probably the single most important thing you need to do for your site to be found on the web. It's true that even if your site is technically perfect for search engine spider to crawl, it won t help you much to be listed until you also add good & relevant content. The text should be factually and grammatically correct. If the content is unique and exclusive/or specific enough to appeal to people nothing can be better than that. Certainly it must be about the subject of your website, and also be useful to the people.

Our experience have showed us that good informative contents have huge traffic to websites and attracted visitors to visit the same site again. And then these returned visitors who liked the content eventually gave links to those sites. Good number and quality back links too attract search engine robots for allocating high page ranks to your websites.

When we talk about fresh content it means adding new content regularly. This gives visitors to revisit the site for new data. And well Search engine robots visits and indexes those websites more often say every week which update their contents regularly

And hence we have inhouse data feeders for our clients whom they can hire to help write, and edit the content send or written by them. It is very clear that consistent high rankings is not possible without good content.

2. Target on keywords and keyphrases

Keywords are the key element what any user would type for searching a particular word. Say 'gifts', people searching for gifts would type gifts on search engines and all those sites related to gifts would appear. But we suggest to target on keyphrases more than keywords, it even makes users to find their product from relevant categories faster and easier. Say 'Diwali gifts India' is a keyphrase which will certainly open the list of indian sites offering diwali gifts and not all the sites related to any gifts. Keyphrases and keywords are at the heart of achieving high search engine rankings. Search engine spiders look for the keyphrases and keywords in several places on a web page to determine what the site is about and index it accordingly.

Keyphrases work better than keywords as keywords face huge competition on web when compared to keyphrases. Keyphrases and keywords specified with particular country area or city can be found faster on web. Many Seo companies get fast customer satisfaction by showing 7 out 10 from the list of keyphrases and keywords given by their customers by showing them graphic display that 7 of their keywords are ranked number one, 6 are in the top 10, and 3 are in the top 20 on some of the search engines. But these some search engines collectively gain only a few hits a month. Without information on what the high-ranking keywords are, the customer's site will be optimized but will not gain the traffic they are seeking.

Creative Web Solution however aims at listing clients website with related keyphrases and keywords in the top search engines like google.com, google.co.in, msn.com, yahoo.com. We sign the customers trust in our contract with getting them listed within the first page of search engines and in worst case within first 20 websites listed by search engines.

3. Use of descriptive page titles and real page headings Writing descriptive page titles means page titles should be simple, yet descriptive and relevant. It helps search engines to know what each page is about more faster and easier. Good search engine webmasters even place link to the page titles.

As we say, the title element is one of the most crucial elements on a page. And then, avoiding use of same title text for all documents is strictly recommended. By placing same title on all pages will make it much harder for search engines, people browsing through search results, and site visitors to quickly find out what the document is about.

Using real headings means h1 - h6 elements for headings. But if these elements are used with graphics for headings, will not attract search engines much attention, however it will definitely give you the typeface you want. Do write valid, clean code. Big file size often let search engine spider to read it half and then crawl to other files. Hence one should get rid of things like useless font tags by using CSS, it will certainly reduce the file size, and thus will help search engine spiders only to read what it needs and speed browser loading.

4. User Friendly Url's URL are one of the worst elements of the web from a user interface standpoint. However, Google views a website better if the website url are short, logical, and self-correcting. Such URLs can be acceptably usable.

User-friendly URL's are easier to type, and to remember. URL should define or name the product or category of a website dealing with. Say a website dealing with online store for homeopathy products having url www.homeopathystore.in would attract search engine robots more faster than a url as www.maplewood.com for the same website. Url's defining subject of a website helps the search engines to know what the site is about.

There are four characteristics that make URL's user-friendly

1. Short - Short Url's means the url should not be more than two levels deep. A url like www.creativewebpromotion.com/germany/toronto/place.htm would sound more better than www.creativewebpromotion.com/germany_country/toronto_city/place_area_no.htm

For defining a product in url we would recommend a url www.hoodiagordoniidietpill.org better than www.hoodia_gordonii_diet_pill_store.org

Short URLs are better because they're easier to type, easier to remember, and easier to write down or say out loud in conversation.

2. Lowercase - Url's should always be in lower case. Instead of using "placements.com/Employment/Greater_Toronto_Area/", use "placements.com/jobs/toronto". URL's mixed with capital nd lower cases are hard to remember harder to express loudly in conversations.

3. Plain language - Avoid using codes like "placements.com/Employment-??/$GTA_Toronto_Area+++/" New users would find it difficult to remember such url's

4. Conventional - Use conventional words in urls which every general user would type while searching for his destination. Say instead of typing "placements.com/employment/pink-city.htm" placements.com/jobs/jaipur.htm would sound more conventional and what actually users would use on web.

5. Link Building Links form an important part when go through technicalities of a web page. Broken links on a web page prohibits search engine robots to go further in your websites. It even gives bad impression to the visitors. Many Seo webmasters make as many keywords related to a particular product and then place as many links of th keywords on their homepage. But google spiders take this as spamming. More than 90 links on a page are considered as spamming by search engine robots whether it includes external or internal links.

Backlinks or inbound better links to understand through reciprocal link exchanges is a very effective promotional and advertising tool. Building inbound links definitely improves your rankings in the search engines by raising your link popularity, increasing your website traffic, and providing a valuable resource for your website customers and visitors.

Well building links would have many bad effects too if links are build only with those sites having zero page ranks. But those sites would certainly benefit with such link exchanges. In the same way building quality links means exchanging links with high page rank sites would definitely benefit you too.

Key things for building quality links:

1: Use Terms that attract other people's interests.

It means make the website owners feel that they are going to be gained through this link exchange then only shall web site owners link to your site. You can do this by purchasing or trading with those website owners for links or by offering them content that is of enough interest to make them want to share it with their readers.

2. The other person should be made feel being important.

Everyone likes to feel special. Even a sweetest compliments about a specific article or resource available on someone's site can set the base for a polite link request. When they come to know that someone reads and enjoys their site, the site owner feels important.

3. Exchange links with websites that will bring you targeted traffic. Targeted traffic means visitors and/or customers that will be interested in your products or services.

4. Always keep your link title brief and free of long sentences. (aim for 200 characters or less).

5. Avoid capitalizing all letters in your link title or description. It would count for spamming and would certainly look untidy.

6. Never remove a link partner from your site once they have agreed to exchange links with you and placed your link on their site. It gives an impression of fraud or misfit.

6. Sitemaps/ Google Sitemaps/ ROR Sitemaps Sitemap allows visitors to study all links in the website on a single page. It is a master list of all their site's pages for brief explanation to visitors. The purpose of this Sitemap is to help the visitors and search engines know about all features of your site in short span and easily.

When once the sitemap is ready we recommend submitting your sitemaps to google. Google accepts XML file of sitemap which allows webmasters to submit a master list of all their site's pages to Google for indexing. Any site who needs indexing from google spider can submit XML sitemap, However small websites very often dont require it. And well the sitemap submitted to google needs regular updates as the most current version of your site in Google's index can help in better ranking of pages in your websites.

As you probably know, sitemaps are important for making sure your site can be completely spidered and indexed by the search engines.

Another option for sitemaps are ROR Sitemaps. ROR is an exciting new sitemap tool that uses XML feeds to describe your website. These sitemaps are structured feeds that enable search engines to complement text search with structured information to better interpret the meaning of your site. With a ROR sitemap, search engines can better understand your products, services, images, newsletters, articles, podcasts, and anything else that you want to describe. For example, if you are selling products, a ROR file enables you to document your product names, descriptions, prices, images, availability, affilate programs, and any other relevant information.

7. Translating Your Website Into Other Languages

One of the best ways to attract worldwide traffic is to translate your site and register it with both English and foreign-language search engines and directories. If you are a seasoned SEO, you'll be happy to hear that the competition in foreign search engines is much less than in those of the United States. In addition, online foreign language markets are currently growing at a much faster rate than English speaking markets. Creative Web Solution helps you have the opportunity to tap into this market while it's in an exponential growth phase with its special feature of multi lingual websites

Super Simple Ways To Optimize Your Site For Search Engines By Lydia Quinn

By Lydia Quinn

While serious search engine optimization remains a difficult and often daunting task for your average website owner, there are many simple things you can do to optimize your site for the search engines. These simple tasks are relatively easy to perform and can be very beneficial to any search engine optimization campaign.

Page Titles

One of the most important aspects of on page optimization is to optimize all your page titles. Very few homemade websites and even those made by far more costly amateur and even professional web designers forget, or just don't know, that you should place your most important keyword phrase or two in your page title. If your #1 most important keyword is "orange cat figurines", then your page title should look something like this:

Company Name - Orange Cat Figurines

Simple as that! As long as you don't repeat one word more than several times in the title, you can place more than one phrase in the title, like this:

Company Name - Orange Cat Figurines, Feline Figurine Store

Notice we didn't repeat a single word more than once, fit in 2 important keyword phrases and also fit in the official company name? This is a good title. You can also move the company name to the end of the title to place greater importance on your phrases, like this:

Orange Cat Figurines and Feline Figurines at Company Name

All three formats make good page titles for just about any website.

Body Text

Next, we have the body text of the site. So often, you see sites that have very little or no text on their sites at all. Your main page especially, needs to have some good descriptive text that incorporates the purpose of the website and your most important keyword phrases. Flash sites, sites with splash or entrance pages and sites that are graphics heavy, too often miss this important step.

Your text should read naturally and explain what your site offers and can even include a summary of your products, services, direct links to important pages on the site and contact information.

Page File Names

The file names of each page of your site are also important and can be optimized. Here are some examples of appropriate optimization of page file names:

orange-cats.htm orange-cat-figurine.htm cat-figurines.htm blackcatfigurines.htm

It's quite simple, name the pages that you have these products on with the most important keyword phrase for those products. Avoid using too many words here, just 1 short keyword phrase works best. There's still an argument as to whether the hyphenated version or the non hyphenated version is best. You can also use underscores as well. If your site is already built, you may not be able to change the filenames easily, but if you add additional pages, you can certainly use optimized file names like above.

Heading Tag

This is the very simple H1 tag that makes the text look very large on the page. When the heading tag is used in a page, the search engines tend to think that the phrase contained inside it is very important. The heading tag should be used at the top of a page to highlight one important keyword phrase that is describing the content of the page.

Alternate Image Text

While some search engines don't bother to read this text, some major ones still do. You can optimize the alternate image text to describe an image, but don't stuff it with keywords. Here are some examples of good alternate image text that incorporates keywords:

Orange Cat Figurine (to describe an orange cat figurine) Cat Store Logo (for the logo) Cat Figurine Catalog (for button linking to the main catalog page showing cat figurines)

The alternate text names of each image will also show up when you hover your mouse over an image or for people who are on low speed connections and whose images don't load or take a long time to load.

There you are, 5 very simple and easy ways to optimize your site for search engines.

SEO - Use DMOZ for Excellent Results By Christopher Angus

By Christopher Angus

There have been many discussions about how registering with DMOZ affects your sites ranking. However, the majority of Search Engine Optimisers (SEO) will agree that registering with the DMOZ directory will help your site significantly improve in the search engine results. It's not always going to make the biggest difference to your site but on the whole it should help your site jump up quite a few places. Even if it does nothing for your site, it is still a link back to your site.
There are two common ways to get your site listed in the DMOZ directory. The first is to try and find your relative category; this is by far the hardest way to go about registering your site with DMOZ. Speaking from experience, I would not suggest this way as people almost always get their DMOZ entry in the wrong category. This will delay your insertion into DMOZ by months and months.

The second way in which you can apply to get your site listed in DMOZ is by going through your regions until you find your specific town or city. I would certainly suggest going about registering your site with DMOZ in this manner.

When registering your site with DMOZ, you will be asked to fill out a little bit of information about your website. Make it matter of fact as if it was another person describing what your site offers. Avoid words that promote your site, like best, leader, brilliant etc. DMOZ does not want sales pitches in their descriptions they simply want to know what your website has to offer. Since I am an editor as DMOZ, I can confirm that having to rewrite website descriptions does not motivate me to registering a particular site. I usually do all the websites that don't need much work and then get around to registering the ones that do.

As of writing this article DMOZ has been out of action for almost two months, this has stopped any new websites being registered. It is assumed that DMOZ will be back online and accepting new website submissions by the beginning of 2007.

Tips for Writing Search Engine Optimized Press Releases by Michelle Howe

By Michelle Howe

Online press releases are one of the most inexpensive and highly effective marketing methods for a small business owner. Yet, many people think only "big businesses" use press releases. Wrong.
The Internet gives a small business's website the same visibility as a large corporation's website and online press releases work the same way. Once an online press release is distributed, it's out there in cyberspace generating hits and driving traffic to your website for years to come. Just last week I received an e-mail from someone who read a press release I wrote two years ago!

Unlike an offline press release that is distributed directed to journalists at newspapers and other media outlets, the online press release is "evergreen," it never goes away. A simple keyword search could turn up your press release years later. Compare this to the offline press release that may or not be used by the journalists and then is trashed, never to be seen again.

An online press release also has a worldwide distribution to thousands of media outlets. Popular newswire service PRWeb.com, e-mails "press releases to between 60,000 and 100,000 global contacts points including journalists, analysts, freelance writers, media outlets and newsrooms."

Along with its large distribution and staying power, an online press release can be even more effective in driving traffic to a website if it is search engine optimized. Here are five tips on how to create a more powerful online press release:

1. Have a newsworthy angle. A press release is not a sales pitch. Provide the media with information that answers the questions of "who, what, where, why and when." Make it interesting by telling a story that engages the reader

2. Choose the right keywords. What words would someone use to find your business when using Google? Experiment to see which words are most popular. When you type in a phrase in the Google search feature, it now lists the number of times that particular phrase has been searched in the last 30 days. This is a new free service being offered by Google; use it to your advantage.

3. Vary keyword placement. Don't get so carried away with your keyword phrase that it shows up in every other sentence of the press release. Have a reasonable balance in your writing so that the keyword placement is invisible to the reader. Include the keyword phrase in the first sentence and then two or three more times throughout the press release

4. Use eye catching headlines. Make sure to include the keyword phrase in your headline and at the same time, make the headline interesting. Write the headline after you have completed your press release and it should easily come to you.

5. Use anchor text. Although it will cost you more to place a press release with anchor text, it is well worth the money. Anchor text is the hyperlinked words on a Web page that you click on to take you to another location within the website or to another website. Search engines love anchor text because it tells them what the page is about. It's a great way to boost your ranking with the search engines, especially Google.

Consider using search engine optimized press releases to publicize your business and drive traffic to your website. It's simple to get started and hugely rewarding. One of my clients had over 1,400 media outlets pick-up his press release within two weeks after I wrote it. A keyword search found the press release as top ranked on both Google and Yahoo. Needless to say, we are going to continue with monthly search engine optimized press releases.

SEO - Link Building for Beginners - By Christopher Angus

SEO - Link Building for Beginners - By Christopher Angus

Search Engine Optimisation has two distinct area's the first being On-page optimisation and the second, off-page optimisation. On-page optimisation is what you can actually
do to your website that will affect your ranking on the search engines. This includes changing your title tags, H1 Tags etc. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) like anything
else adheres to the 80/20 rule, whereby on-page optimisation accounts for 20% of search engine rankings.

The other 80% comes from link building, which is by far the hardest part when it comes to SEO. Link building is getting other sites to link back to your own website. Like
everything else in the world, links have varying degrees of quality, you get really poor quality links which can actually harm your website or you can get excellent links which
will help your rankings tremendously. Obviously, the best quality links are the hardest to obtain. For your information, the best kind of links to get, are links that come from
Universities or Government websites. Search Engines love these links and if you do manage to get one your website will almost certainly help get your website on to the first
page within a couple of months.

The worst types of links are backlinks that come from Porn Sites, Pharma Sites or Gambling Sites.

I will list the ways in which a person can obtain links for their website.

1) Buy Links - The better the link, the more expensive they are. 2) Ask For Links - Either via Phone or Email. 3) Link Exchanges - Swap Links with other webmasters. 4)
Register with Directories - Register your site with a number of directories. 5) Write Articles - Submit your articles to article directories like Ezine. 6) Write Press Releases -
Submit to sites like PRweb. 7) Use Viral marketing techniques - Use sites like pay per post (link baiting).

I would suggest doing all of the above when you first start trying to do SEO on your own site. A good mix of links is always good, try not to buy too many "cheap & cheerful"
links as these will not do your site much good.

SEO - How to Get A Top Ranking in Google - By Chris Angus

SEO - How to Get A Top Ranking in Google - By Chris Angus

It's a dream come true for a webmasters site to appear at the top of Google's search results, especially if the website is actually selling a product or service. In a competitive
industry this would mean that the orders would start rolling in with such a force that the business would grow incredibly quickly. Is it all just a dream? NO! I've done it for
hundreds of businesses and you can do it for yourself too.

The first and foremost task when trying to get your site to the top of Google is to start link building, not just any old link building but having your keywords included in your
"anchor". Anchor links are when the links are actually clickable, if for example you were selling green buttons the link would not be a www link. It would actually say "green
buttons".

The next step is choosing the correct keyword phrases for your site. Now most people want to be on the first page of Google for a one word phrase like "Buttons". However, if
you only sold buttons made of silver, it would be bringing you the wrong type of customer. It would be best to choose keyword phrases like "Silver Buttons" or "Buttons made
of Silver". This would bring you the right type of customer and it your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) efforts would show results a lot quicker.

Integrate the keyword phrases throughout your site with your best ones on your homepage. Without the keywords on your site, your site will not perform at all.

The next step is to actually go out and get some back links to your site, be smart about whom you get links from, as websites that are relevant to your industry will have far
more weight when it comes to giving you good results. Getting a few powerful links with a page rank of 6 or 7 will give you almost immediate results and I have personally
seen websites make it onto the first page within a couple of days.
